BENGALURU: Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge has ordered a review of police action against protesters who were detained ahead of a planned demonstration in Bengaluru over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
According to reports published on October 13, the protesters included students, senior citizens, activists and lawyers. They had planned to march towards the Chief Electoral Officer's office to raise concerns about the electoral roll revision process and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The detentions took place on Monday, October 12. Protest organisers alleged that police action restricted their demonstration, while the Home Minister said peaceful protests and democratic dissent must be protected.
The issue has renewed debate over electoral transparency, citizens' rights and the handling of public demonstrations.
